Restoration of the Monroe County
Courthouse Bell Tower
In 2008 the Monroe County Bar Foundation, the charitable arm of the Monroe County Bar Association, committed to raising funds to repair the bell tower in the Monroe County Courthouse.
The Monroe County Courthouse was built in 1890 and for many years, the bell tower overlooking courthouse square was in disrepair and nonfunctional. Restoring the bell tower would enhance the image of the courthouse and contribute to the historical significance of courthouse square.
David J. Williamson spearheaded a committee that enlisted, at no cost, the help of Wayne Vanderhoof, Strunk- Albert Engineering, and Lombardo & Lipe Electrical Contractors to restore the bell tower to its original condition. The cost of the restoration would end up costing over $20,000. With the efforts and support of the Foundation, the funds were raised.
Today, the bell is rung only on limited occasions – when lawyers are welcomed at the annual Swearing in Ceremony and at a memorial service held for a member of the Monroe County Bar Association who has passed away.
By restoring the bell tower to its original condition, we are proud that our legal community have given Monroe County back a vital piece of its legal history.
